At the same time as food is being enjoyed, people brace for the next attack. When kids play in the pool, in the northern parts of Kharkiv, a mere 20 kilometers away from the frontline, laughter is mixed with muffled explosions. Traveling by car, a familiar feeling for a lot of people, feels physically the same, even when you’re well within the range of drones. The drones packed with explosives sound similar to those capturing photos and videos on your vacation. Soldiers on the frontlines are the same people who surround you in peacetime, and when a couple shares their newfound love for each other, another couple is ripped apart.

Outside Kurakhove, “harmata” (warning for cannon) is called out, followed by a shot fired from their American-made Paladin M109 howitzer donated by Italy. After a few seconds, an update comes over the radio whether if they hit or if they need to adjust their aim.
At Maidan Square in Kyiv, the ultimate consequences of the war are becoming clear. Thousands of flags have been raised in memory of all those who lost their lives in the war.
